Beurré Gris de Luçon deserves a place in an orchard intended to supply fruit through winter. Its grey, uneven pears are not the most visually attractive, but storage transforms the flesh into something fine, melting, exceptionally juicy and aromatic. The tree has useful resistance to pear scab. We would favour a vigorous rootstock when the aim is to produce a substantial, long-lived tree.

Description

‘Beurré Gris de Luçon’, also known as ‘Beurré Gris d’Hiver Nouveau’, is an old long-keeping variety from the Vendée, propagated since around 1830.

The medium to large fruit is rounded to irregularly oval and often slightly knobbly. Its thick, rough, greyish-green skin is extensively mottled with russet and may develop a light blush on the side exposed to the sun.

The yellowish-white flesh is fine, melting and very juicy. Its flavour is sweet, slightly acidic, vinous and aromatic, with a few grit cells sometimes present around the core.

Picked around mid-October, this pear develops its best quality after a period in storage, generally from December onwards, and can be kept until February under suitable conditions.

The tree is moderately vigorous, fertile and only slightly susceptible to scab. It prefers lighter soils and sufficiently warm positions. It can be grafted onto quince, but growth may remain weak and the tree can be relatively short-lived; a pear seedling or another vigorous rootstock is preferable.
