Poire à Clément is one of the finest alternatives to Bartlett for opening the pear season. Its exceptionally large fruit has white, very fine, melting and juicy flesh with remarkably powerful musky aromas. The vigorous tree is exceptionally healthy. Harvest timing is crucial, as yellow fruit quickly becomes mealy. Being triploid and incompatible with quince, it requires a suitable pear rootstock.

Description

Clement’s pear is a French dessert pear, with an excellent fondant-like sweet flesh. It can be considered as an improved Williams / Barlett (to which it is closely-related).

This is a pear for eating fresh, in early September. The pears have an excellent flavour but do not keep.

Variety rediscovered by the CRRG in 1981 at Clément Lamer’s in Englefontaine, in Avesnois. Genetic studies link it to a mutation of Merton Pride.
