Can American pawpaw produce fruit in a cool European climate?
American pawpaw, Asimina triloba, is the only widely cultivated winter-hardy member of a botanical family otherwise associated principally with tropical and subtropical plants.
Despite its exotic-looking leaves and custard-like fruit, a dormant and established pawpaw tree can tolerate winters considerably colder than those experienced across much of northern and western Europe.
Winter survival is therefore not normally the principal difficulty.
Reliable fruit production depends more on the length and warmth of the growing season, successful pollination and careful establishment of the young tree.
