Shenandoah Pawpaw Tree is a high-quality pawpaw variety appreciated for its very large fruit, often reaching around 450 g under good growing conditions. The yellow flesh has a creamy texture, sometimes compared to crème brûlée, with rich exotic aromas.
Pawpaw fruit offers a unique flavour profile, often described as a blend of banana, mango, pineapple and other tropical fruits depending on the variety and ripeness. Shenandoah is particularly valued for its generous fruit size, smooth texture and excellent eating quality.
The tree is very hardy, tolerating temperatures down to around -25°C once established, and this species is generally not affected by significant disease problems. Harvest usually begins in early September.
Shenandoah is not self-fertile and requires another pawpaw variety nearby for cross-pollination. Any genetically different pawpaw variety can act as a suitable pollinator.
Pawpaw trees can be delicate at planting. For best establishment, plant them once growth has started, keep the base weed-free and water during dry periods in the first years after planting. In cooler climates, a bare and lightly cultivated soil surface can help warm the ground in spring.
Our Shenandoah pawpaw trees are grafted onto seedling pawpaw rootstock and grown in the nursery for three years, with one year of graft growth.
