Passe Crassane remains an outstanding winter pear for eating quality, with fine, melting and exceptionally juicy flesh combining sweetness with refreshing acidity. It nevertheless needs a warm position to ripen well and demands careful disease management. Frequent secondary blossom greatly increases fire blight risk. We would therefore reserve it for experienced collectors rather than a low-input orchard seeking reliability.

Description

Passe Crassane pear tree produces pears with fine, melting flesh and abundant juice of excellent eating quality.

The fruit is picked in October, stores fairly well, and is mainly intended for eating in early winter.

Disease sensitivity is average overall. Passe Crassane has higher exposure to fire blight than many other pear varieties because it tends to flower twice, extending the period when flowers can act as an entry point for the disease.

Flowering is mid-season. Passe Crassane pollinates well with Beurré Superfin and Cornélie.

Passe Crassane was once the most widely grown pear variety in France. Its propagation was banned in nurseries in 1994 because of fire blight concerns, but this legal restriction was repealed in July 2021.

We produce this grafted pear tree on several rootstocks, which influence the vigour and final size of the mature tree. It is available in several tree forms depending on availability.
