Dell’Auzzana

‘Dell’Auzzana’ is a traditional Italian variety originating from Emilia-Romagna, where it has long been grown in a small number of orchards and regional collections.

The medium to large fruit varies in shape, but is usually pear-shaped and fairly broad. Its smooth skin turns yellow when ripe and, when well exposed to sunlight, develops an attractive bright-red blush over approximately 30 to 40% of its surface.

The creamy-white flesh is moderately fine, reasonably juicy and mild in flavour. A few grit cells may be present around the core, without significantly affecting its quality when the fruit is eaten at the correct stage of ripeness.

Harvest takes place during the second half of August and may continue into early September. The fruit has a good storage life and is relatively resistant to internal browning and breakdown during storage.

The tree is very vigorous, upright and generally highly productive. It flowers in mid-season. As the variety is reported to be susceptible to the main diseases affecting pear trees, it should be planted in an open, well-ventilated position and monitored regularly.
