Hortensia

‘Hortensia’ is a modern German variety selected at Dresden-Pillnitz for its abundant crops and particularly attractive fruit.

The medium to large pears vary in shape, but are generally elongated and broader on one side. Their smooth, greenish-yellow skin develops an attractive bright-red blush over one-third to one-half of the fruit, with stronger colouring in warm, sunny positions.

The yellowish flesh is initially moderately firm, becoming melting when fully ripe. It is reasonably juicy and mildly sweet, with a refreshing, noticeable acidity and a subtle hint of melon.

Harvest takes place from mid-September to the end of the month, at approximately the same time as ‘Conference’. The fruit can be eaten until late October and may be kept in cold storage until November. It should be picked at the correct stage, as overripe fruit may fall from the tree.

The tree is fertile, moderately to strongly vigorous, with a broad, spreading habit. It begins cropping quickly and produces very high, regular yields. This diploid, mid-to-late-flowering variety can be pollinated by ‘Conference’, ‘Williams’, ‘Clapp’s Favourite’, ‘Beurré d’Anjou’ or ‘Comtesse de Paris’. It is very slightly susceptible to scab, but susceptible to fire blight.
