Red Anjou pear tree produces pears of excellent quality for fresh eating. The fruit is very sweet, well flavoured and visually attractive thanks to its red skin.
This is a good-keeping pear, ripening fairly late, with good productivity. In eating quality, it can be compared to Doyenné du Comice.
Red Anjou is the red clone of Beurré d’Anjou, with similar qualities and the additional appeal of its red colour.
The fruit is picked in late September and can keep until December.
Red Anjou can be susceptible to scab, with no other particular sensitivity noted.
Flowering is very early. It pollinates well with St Jean d’Hardelot and Sucrée de Montluçon.
Red Anjou is a mutation of Beurré d’Anjou, a variety obtained in Belgium around 1822–1823. It later took the name Anjou because it was grown there.
This clone is widely grown and appreciated in the United States, while in Europe its production remains very limited and trees are difficult to find.
The variety offered here comes from the regional genetic resources centre in Villeneuve-d’Ascq.
We produce this grafted pear tree on several rootstocks, which influence the vigour and final size of the mature tree. It is available in several tree forms depending on availability.
