Eugène Thiriot

‘Eugène Thiriot’ is an old local variety originating from the Ardennes, formerly grown around Charleville, Mézières, Sedan and Carignan.

The medium to fairly large fruit is short and broad, slightly truncated at the top and sometimes irregular in shape. Its slightly rough skin turns pale yellow when ripe, with russet colouring and occasionally a pink blush on the side exposed to the sun.

The yellowish-white flesh is fine, melting, buttery and exceptionally juicy. Its flavour is richly sweet, pleasantly aromatic and of excellent quality when eaten at the correct stage of ripeness.

Harvest generally takes place during the second half of October. The pears then continue to ripen after picking and are mainly eaten in November.

The tree is particularly suitable for traditional orchard cultivation and standard trees grafted onto pear seedling rootstock. As its growth is fairly weak on quince, a vigorous pear rootstock is preferable for a durable and well-developed tree.
