Melrose is an excellent winter apple for both fresh eating and cooking. Its large fruit has firm, juicy and mildly sharp flesh that becomes more aromatic after several weeks in storage. The apples are often at their best after Christmas and can keep until spring. The tree crops generously, although thinning helps improve fruit size and maintain more regular harvests.

Description

Melrose is a well-regarded American apple, with an attractive red-flushed skin.

Melrose is very similar to Jonathan, one of the best-flavoured American apples – and one of its parents. The other parent is Red Delicious, and its sweet flavour complements the sharper flavors of Jonathan well.

The apples store well – they can be kept for 3 months in a fridge, and the flavour is arguably at its best after a month or so of storage.
