Géant d’Hedelfingen suits gardens and orchards with room for a vigorous cherry tree. It is a reliable choice for growers seeking a late, hardy and regularly productive cultivar. The dark-red to black fruit is firm and juicy, with reasonably good resistance to rain cracking. A compatible pollinator and a rootstock suited to the available space are required.

Description

Hedelfingen is an old-fashioned dark red / black sweet cherry, which ripens late in the cherry season.

It is thought to originate from Germany in the 18th or 19th century.

Despite its age Hedelfingen has many of the features modern growers expect. It crops regularly and reliably from a young age, is cold hardy, reasonably resistant to fruit splitting, and produces a tidy tree which is easy for hand-picking.
