Kometa Interspecific Plum Tree is a complex Prunus hybrid producing attractive fruit of around 50 to 60 g with good keeping qualities. The flesh is juicy, semi-firm, aromatic and pleasantly sweet, with flavours and texture reminiscent of apricot, enhanced by a more floral note.
This variety comes from a rich genetic background involving several Prunus species, including myrobalan plum, Japanese plum, Ussurian plum and Chinese plum. This diversity gives Kometa an original flavour profile, strong productivity and improved flower hardiness compared with many traditional plum varieties.
Kometa ripens early, usually during the first half of July in northern France. The tree flowers early and is partially self-fertile, but fruit set is improved by planting Japanese plums or other compatible hybrid Prunus varieties nearby.
The variety shows good disease resistance and good tolerance to frost during flowering, making it particularly interesting for growers in cooler or more uncertain spring climates.
Kometa was created in 1987 from a cross between Skoroplodnaya and Pionerka, two varieties with complex hybrid ancestry. This breeding background explains its unusual fruit quality, productivity and adaptation.
Our Kometa interspecific plum trees are grafted onto different rootstocks and offered in several forms, allowing the choice of vigour and adult tree size according to the planting situation.
