Duchess of Oldenburg is an excellent early variety for cold regions and higher-altitude orchards. The very hardy tree begins cropping young and produces attractive red-striped apples with juicy, aromatic and pleasantly sharp flesh. They are useful for fresh eating, sauces and pies. Harvest begins in late summer, but the fruit has a short storage life and softens quickly.
