Beurré de Naghin Pear Tree is an old Belgian pear variety producing fine, melting and sweet fruit of very good overall quality. Its aroma is delicate rather than powerful, but the fruit is pleasant and refined when properly ripened.
The pears are harvested around mid-October and are generally eaten from late November through January. For best eating quality, they should be picked while still firm, stored in a cool place or refrigerator, then brought out a few days before eating to allow them to finish ripening.
Beurré de Naghin is a very fertile variety with strong vigour. It flowers in mid-season and can be grown on different rootstocks depending on the desired adult tree size and planting system.
This variety may show some sensitivity to pear scab, but no other major disease sensitivity is noted. Careful fruit handling is recommended, as pears are easily bruised and damaged fruit will not store well.
Beurré de Naghin originated from a seedling raised by Mr Evrard and was later selected by Norbert Daras of Naghin, near Tournai in Belgium. It remains an interesting choice for heritage orchards and pear enthusiasts looking for a vigorous winter dessert pear.
