Black Velvet is a gooseberry quite unlike the conventional green cultivars. Its purple-black fruit develops a mild, complex flavour when ripe, sometimes compared with blueberry, while the vigorous plant offers useful disease resistance. We would select it for eating quality and originality rather than exceptionally large berries. The fruit should be allowed to darken and soften before its flavour is judged.

Black Velvet gooseberry bush produces very dark fruits with an unusual flavour, including exotic notes. It is an original variety for a traditional fruit.
At full maturity, Black Velvet reaches a good sugar level. The berries can be tasted before mid-July, but the best harvest is in the second half of July, when the fruit is quite soft and deeply coloured.
This variety has very good overall disease resistance. Its thorns also help provide some protection against browsing animals.
Black Velvet is self-fertile, so a single plant is enough to produce fruit.
