I see Raullin mainly as a blending pear. Its sharp juice can bring real freshness and structure to a perry that would otherwise feel too soft. Its heavy cropping, quick entry into production and usefulness as a pollinizer also make it a practical orchard cultivar.

Description

Perry Pear ‘Raullin’ is a traditional French cultivar of Pyrus communis grown primarily for perry production.

The fruit is small to medium-sized, generally around 50–70 g, with firm flesh containing a large quantity of juice. Its main characteristic is its high acidity. Rather than being used primarily to increase sugar, ‘Raullin’ is valuable for bringing freshness, tension and balance to blends containing sweeter or softer perry pears.

The tree comes into bearing relatively quickly and is a good to very heavy cropper. Flowering is late and the variety is also valued as a pollinizer in traditional perry orchards. Harvest is late, usually towards the end of November, and the fruit has very good keeping and ground-holding qualities.

‘Raullin’ is not directly compatible with quince rootstocks. Pear seedling rootstocks or a compatible interstem should therefore be used when grafting this cultivar.
