Blanche de Wavrans Cherry Tree is a rare regional sweet cherry variety from northern France, originally found in Wavrans-sur-l’Aa in the Haut-Pays d’Artois.
The fruit is small to medium-sized, rounded and pale yellow to translucent, sometimes developing a light pink-orange blush when fully ripe. The flesh is soft, sweet and very juicy, making it suitable for fresh eating.
One of the main advantages of this white cherry variety is that the fruit is generally less attractive to birds than red cherries, which can help reduce losses at harvest.
Blanche de Wavrans usually ripens from late June to early July. Its self-fertility is not clearly established, so planting another compatible cherry variety nearby is recommended to improve fruit set.
This heritage variety was preserved by the CRRG and remains an interesting choice for collectors, traditional orchards and growers looking for unusual regional fruit varieties.
