Seuri is one of the more distinctive Asian pears in the collection. I like its crisp, aromatic fruit and the fact that it combines excellent eating quality with useful resistance to scab and a reasonable level of fire blight tolerance. Its main limitation is the extremely early bloom, so a matching early pollinizer is essential.

Asian Pear ‘Seuri’ is an old Chinese pear cultivar, also encountered under names such as ‘Seuri Li’ and ‘Se Li’.
The fruit is large and round, with a yellow-green ground colour becoming golden to orange-brown with russeting. The white flesh is crisp, juicy and aromatic, with a mild sweet flavour that can develop floral and apricot-like notes. Fruit quality is considered excellent when fully mature.
‘Seuri’ flowers extremely early, around 10 to 14 days before ‘Bartlett’ in California trials. It therefore needs another very early flowering pear nearby. ‘Ya Li’ and ‘Tsu Li’ are the classic compatible companions. The fruit ripens late, generally from the second half of September into early October depending on climate.
The tree is upright, productive and relatively early to bear. ‘Seuri’ shows good resistance to pear scab and moderate to good tolerance of fire blight, although it can be susceptible to Pseudomonas. Fruit should not be left excessively long in cold storage because Chinese pears including ‘Seuri’ can develop internal browning.
