Lehman’s Delight Pawpaw Tree is a high-quality pawpaw variety appreciated for its very large fruit and smooth, creamy flesh. The flavour is mild, sweet and rich, with the exotic character typical of pawpaws.
Pawpaw fruit develops unusual tropical aromas, often compared to banana, mango, pineapple or vanilla depending on variety and ripeness. Lehman’s Delight is particularly valued for its generous fruit size, soft texture and very sweet eating quality.
This mid-late variety generally ripens from late September to early October. The fruit is best eaten fresh when fully ripe, once the flesh becomes soft, fragrant and creamy.
Lehman’s Delight is not self-fertile and requires another genetically different pawpaw variety nearby for cross-pollination. Any other pawpaw cultivar can act as a suitable pollinator.
Pawpaw trees are very hardy once established, tolerating temperatures down to around -25°C, and this species is generally not affected by significant disease problems.
Pawpaw trees can be delicate at planting. For best establishment, plant them once growth has started, keep the base weed-free and water during dry periods during the first years after planting. In cooler climates, keeping the soil surface bare and lightly cultivated in spring can help warm the ground and encourage growth.
Our Lehman’s Delight pawpaw trees are grafted onto seedling pawpaw rootstock and grown in the nursery for three years, with one year of graft growth.
