Tangelo Citrus Tree is a sweet citrus variety producing fruit that can be used like mandarins, with a soft pleasant flavour and a slightly different flesh texture. The fruit usually contains few or no seeds, making it enjoyable for fresh eating.
The harvest generally takes place in November. If frost is not expected, the fruit can be left on the tree for longer to develop softer and sweeter aromas.
Tangelo is hardy to around -8°C once established and grown in favourable conditions. It is therefore best suited to mild climates, sheltered gardens or container growing where winter protection can be provided during severe cold.
Our Tangelo trees are grafted onto different citrus rootstocks, including Citrumelo 4475, Poncirus Pomeroy and Poncirus Flying Dragon. These rootstocks influence vigour, cold tolerance, soil adaptation and fruit quality.
This variety is thornless, making it easier to handle than many hardy citrus varieties.
For best results, plant Tangelo in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, ideally protected from cold winds. A wall, courtyard or greenhouse-like microclimate can greatly improve winter protection and fruit ripening.
Tangelo can also be grown long-term in a large container, provided it receives regular watering, feeding and winter protection when needed.
