Lange van Lod Walnut Tree (Juglans regia ‘Lange van Lod’) is a Dutch walnut variety originating from the Venlo area in Limburg. It is particularly appreciated for the exceptional size of its walnuts, which are among the largest produced by cultivated walnut varieties.
The nuts are very large, well filled and pleasant in flavour, without the bitterness sometimes found in poorer-quality walnuts. They are also decorative due to their impressive size, making this variety interesting both for nut production and for collectors.
Lange van Lod is self-fertile, as the male and female flowering periods overlap sufficiently for good pollination. However, planting another compatible walnut variety nearby can still help improve nut set in some situations.
The tree has a rounded, fairly open crown and generally reaches around 12 to 15 metres, sometimes more in favourable conditions. It prefers a sunny position and deep, fertile, well-drained soil.
Harvest usually takes place in September to October, when the walnuts naturally fall from the tree. Like all young walnut trees, it may be sensitive to bacterial disease during wet spring conditions, but it remains a remarkable variety for growers looking for very large walnuts with good eating quality.
