Imshu is one of the most useful heartnuts for clean cracking. Its medium-sized nuts may be less spectacular than those of some selections, but the shell separates neatly and can release the kernel whole. The tree crops heavily. Its female flowers are receptive before pollen is shed, so we would pair it with a protandrous heartnut such as Campbell CW1, Stealth or Ernie.

Imshu Heartnut Tree is a selected form of Japanese walnut producing distinctive heart-shaped nuts with a mild, pleasant flavour. The nuts are medium-sized and enclosed in a hard shell, but they split relatively easily compared with many traditional walnuts.
Imshu originates from a seedling of the Japanese heartnut variety Shubert and is appreciated as a productive selection with good nut quality. The kernels are suitable for fresh eating, baking and traditional nut uses.
The tree is vigorous and ornamental, with large compound leaves giving it an attractive, almost tropical appearance during the growing season. It can eventually form a medium to large tree, reaching around 15 metres in good conditions.
Imshu is also valued for its cold hardiness, with tolerance commonly indicated around -25°C once established. Harvest generally takes place from October to November depending on climate and growing conditions.
