Fernor is probably the strongest choice in this group for a productive orchard with reduced exposure to spring frost. Late budbreak, lateral bearing and earlier cropping make it more productive than Franquette. The nuts contain exceptionally light-coloured kernels that are easy to remove. It performs best in fertile soil with reliable moisture and still requires attention to walnut blight.
