‘d’Ente’ is a very old variety emblematic of south-western France, whose fruit is traditionally used to produce the famous Pruneau d’Agen.
The medium to large plum is ovoid and slightly elongated. Its thin skin turns reddish purple to mauve-blue when ripe and is covered with a heavy pale bloom.
The greenish-yellow to golden-yellow flesh is tender, fleshy and abundantly juicy. It has a naturally high sugar content, together with a mild, delicately aromatic flavour. The stone separates fairly easily when the fruit is fully ripe.
Harvest is staggered and generally takes place from the second half of August through the first half of September. The fruit should be collected fully ripe to obtain its maximum sugar content.
‘d’Ente’ plums can be eaten fresh, but are particularly outstanding when dried to produce Pruneaux d’Agen. They are also suitable for compotes, jams, tarts, spirits and both sweet and savoury dishes.
The tree is vigorous, fairly upright, fertile and regularly productive. Its relatively late flowering reduces the risk of damage from late spring frosts. The variety is self-fertile and produces good-quality pollen, allowing it to crop alone and also pollinate other plum trees flowering at a similar time.
