Rupp’s Romanian mulberry tree produces very sweet, flavourful fruit with a subtle aromatic character.
Unlike bramble blackberries, these mulberries are seedless in texture, so there are no hard seeds to get stuck in the teeth.
No particular disease issues are noted for this variety.
Harvest begins in summer and continues over 2 to 3 months. The fruits appear progressively as the plant grows, giving a long staggered ripening period.
Budbreak is late for a mulberry tree, helping it avoid late April frosts. It flowers progressively on the current season’s growth, so even if frost damages the plant, fruiting is not necessarily prevented; it is mainly delayed while the plant regrows.
Because it flowers on new growth, Rupp’s Romanian can be pruned very hard, making it possible to control the height of the tree. It can also be managed as a pollarded tree.
The fruits fall to the ground soon after ripening, which can make the tree useful in settings such as a poultry run.
Rupp’s Romanian is a hybrid between Morus rubra and Morus alba.
We propagate and grow this mulberry tree in the nursery, either grafted on Morus alba or from cuttings depending on the production batch, and offer it in several tree forms depending on availability.
