Neapoli Mulberry Tree is a distinctive mulberry variety originating from Crete in Greece. The name “Neapoli” means “new city”.
This variety produces large magenta mulberries with very good eating quality. The fruit is harvested over a period of around three weeks in June, offering an early summer crop of sweet and attractive berries.
Neapoli has late budbreak for a mulberry, which helps it avoid damage from late April frosts. It flowers progressively on the current season’s growth, so even if young shoots are damaged by frost, the tree can still regrow and fruit later in the season.
This variety flowers and fruits on new growth, allowing quite severe pruning if needed to control tree height. It can also be managed as a pollarded tree, although this may reduce fruit production.
The fruit drops quickly once ripe, which can make Neapoli particularly interesting for poultry runs, where fallen mulberries are readily eaten by hens and other poultry.
Neapoli is generally easy to grow and has no particular disease problems to note. Our trees are produced in the nursery in several forms, either grafted onto Morus alba or grown from cuttings depending on the production batch.
