Chernyy Lebed Fig Tree, meaning “Black Swan”, is a Russian fig variety appreciated for its hardiness and early-ripening autumn crop. The variety originates from the Astrakhan region, where figs are also traditionally used to make liqueur.
The fruit is small, generally around 50 g, with a slightly rough skin and excellent flesh quality. The figs are melting, aromatic and richly flavoured when fully ripe.
Chernyy Lebed is a uniferous fig variety, meaning it produces one main crop per year rather than an early breba crop. Its autumn figs ripen very early, often from mid-August, which makes the harvest more reliable in cooler climates.
The harvest can continue progressively through the season, sometimes until October if the tree keeps growing and forming new figs along the shoots.
This variety is considered resistant and well suited to growers looking for a hardy, productive fig with good flavour and reliable autumn ripening.
Our Chernyy Lebed fig trees are container-grown. Plants supplied in air-pruning pots develop less tangled root systems, helping to improve establishment after planting.
