Chernyy Lebed interests us mainly because its main crop starts early without depending on a breba crop. The small dark figs have melting, aromatic flesh that is much better than their modest size might suggest. Harvesting can continue for an extended period while the tree keeps growing. This is not a cultivar for giant fruit, but one selected for flavour and useful early ripening.

Dispatch generally takes place from late November to February, depending on the weather and the progress of lifting the trees.
Chernyy Lebed fig tree produces small figs of around 50 g, with rough skin and excellent flesh that is melting and aromatic.
This is a uniferous variety, producing one main autumn crop. Its autumn figs ripen very early, from mid-August, which helps secure a harvest each year.
Harvest continues progressively until the last figs ripen. If the tree keeps growing and forming new figs along the shoots, fruiting may continue into October.
Chernyy Lebed does not produce breba figs, which are generally less flavourful and more exposed to spring frosts.
This variety is resistant. Its name means “Black Swan”, and it originates from Russia, which indicates good cold hardiness.
In its growing area around Astrakhan, the figs are also used to make liqueur.
We produce our fig trees in pots. Plants grown in anti-spiral root pots have a less tangled root system, helping good establishment after planting.
