Castérane Chestnut Tree is an old French chestnut variety originating from the Hautes-Pyrénées, appreciated above all for the excellent flavour of its nuts.
The chestnuts are very dark in colour, medium-sized and only slightly divided internally, giving them qualities close to a marron type. They are easy to peel and well suited to fresh eating, roasting and traditional culinary uses.
Castérane ripens in November and offers very good keeping qualities after harvest. It also has later budbreak than many hybrid chestnut varieties, which can be useful in areas exposed to spring frost.
The tree is considered resistant and reliable in cultivation. Our Castérane chestnut trees are available in different forms and on different rootstocks. Marsol rootstock offers strong resistance to soil-borne diseases, while seedling chestnut rootstock may be more sensitive in wet soils.
