Jeannette Chestnut Tree is a French hybrid chestnut variety obtained through a breeding programme involving INRA, CTIFL and INVENIO.
It produces large mahogany-coloured chestnuts with very good flavour and excellent peeling qualities. The nuts are particularly well suited to fresh eating, making Jeannette an interesting variety for high-quality table chestnut production.
This variety ripens in October and offers good keeping qualities after harvest. The fruit is also valued for its resistance to fruit rot, helping to maintain good quality after picking.
Like other Castanea sativa × Castanea crenata hybrids, Jeannette is appreciated for its resistance to ink disease, a serious soil-borne disease that has affected European chestnut orchards since the 19th century.
Budbreak is early, but the variety is considered relatively tolerant of spring frost compared with many classic fruit trees. Its combination of flavour, easy peeling, storage quality and disease resistance makes it a strong choice for modern chestnut orchards and garden planting.
Our Jeannette chestnut trees are produced on their own roots and are available in several forms depending on current nursery stock.
