I would choose Goldcot mainly for reliability rather than for exceptional dessert quality. It is hardy, productive and well adapted to cooler conditions, while the firm fruit is particularly useful for preserving and cooking. For a northern European garden, that reliability can be more valuable than having the most delicate flavour.

Description

Apricot ‘Goldcot’ is an American cultivar of Prunus armeniaca, raised in Michigan from an open-pollinated seedling of ‘Perfection’ and released in 1967.

The fruits are medium to large and almost round, with golden yellow to orange skin and firm orange flesh. Their texture holds up particularly well in the kitchen, making ‘Goldcot’ a very useful apricot for preserves, bottling, baking and freezing. Fully tree-ripened fruits can also be enjoyed fresh.

One of the main reasons to grow ‘Goldcot’ is its reliability in relatively cool climates. Trials in Ontario have described it as a dependable and hardy standard cultivar with regular production. Harvest normally falls around late July to early August, depending on climate.

The tree is fairly vigorous and self-fertile, so a second apricot is not essential for fruit set. It is also reported to show useful resistance to leaf spot. As with all apricots, a sunny and well-drained position remains important, particularly in wetter climates.
