Bellefer Chestnut Tree is a French hybrid chestnut variety obtained through a breeding programme involving INRA, CTIFL and INVENIO.
It produces large chestnuts with good sweetness and easy peeling qualities. Bellefer is particularly valued for its high productivity and is well suited to processing, cooking and traditional chestnut preparations.
This variety ripens in October and offers good keeping qualities after harvest. Like other Castanea sativa × Castanea crenata hybrids, Bellefer is appreciated for its resistance to ink disease, a serious soil-borne disease that has affected European chestnut orchards since the 19th century.
Budbreak is early, but the variety is considered relatively tolerant of spring frost compared with many classic fruit trees. Its combination of productivity, large nut size and disease resistance makes it an interesting choice for modern chestnut orchards.
Our Bellefer chestnut trees are produced on their own roots and are available in several forms depending on current nursery stock.
