Georgia da Torino Black Locust (Robinia × margaretta ‘Georgia da Torino’) is a recent ornamental robinia variety selected in Italy by Maurizio Ceruti. It is appreciated for its spectacular late spring flowering and elegant upright habit.
In May and June, the tree produces abundant clusters of fragrant purple-pink to crimson-pink flowers, which are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. This makes it a very decorative and melliferous tree for gardens and landscape planting.
Compared with older pink-flowered robinias such as ‘Casque Rouge’, Georgia da Torino has been selected for stronger, more flexible branches and shoots that are virtually thornless. The foliage is bright green during the growing season and turns yellow before falling in autumn.
This variety generally forms a medium-sized tree with a rather narrow habit, reaching around 10 to 12 metres in height and about 3 metres in width. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, and shows good tolerance to heat, drought and difficult growing conditions once established.
