Common Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a hardy native European tree appreciated for its dense foliage, elegant habit and excellent ability to withstand pruning.
Its fresh green leaves turn yellow to golden-brown in autumn, and the dry foliage often remains on the branches during part of winter, especially when the tree is grown as a hedge. This makes hornbeam particularly useful for screening, windbreaks and structured garden planting.
Common Hornbeam can eventually form a medium to large tree, but it is also one of the best species for clipped hedges, avenues, pleached trees and naturalistic planting schemes. It tolerates regular cutting very well and forms a dense, refined structure.
This species is robust and adaptable, growing well in a wide range of soils, including heavier ground, provided conditions are not excessively waterlogged. It is an excellent choice for hedging, woodland planting and long-term landscape projects.
