Common Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a majestic native European tree appreciated for its smooth grey bark, dense foliage and elegant natural habit.
Its fresh green leaves create a dense canopy in spring and summer, then turn attractive golden-bronze in autumn. The dry leaves often remain on young trees and hedges through part of winter, giving useful structure and screening.
Common Beech is suitable for woodland planting, large gardens, parks and traditional hedges. It can eventually become a large long-lived tree, but it also responds very well to pruning and is widely used for clipped hedging.
This species prefers fertile, well-drained soils and performs best in temperate climates with sufficient moisture. It is an excellent choice for naturalistic planting, shelterbelts and long-term landscape projects.
