Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia), often called False Acacia, is a fast-growing ornamental and useful tree highly valued by beekeepers for its abundant nectar-rich flowering.
From May to June, the tree produces fragrant white flower clusters that are extremely attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. The famous acacia honey produced from its blossom is prized for its delicate flavour and its ability to remain naturally liquid for a long time.
Black Locust grows quickly and can eventually reach around 20 to 30 metres in height, with a trunk diameter that may approach one metre under favourable conditions. It is a long-lived tree capable of surviving for several centuries.
Native to the Appalachian region of the United States, Robinia pseudoacacia was introduced to France in 1601 by the king’s arborist and has since become widely planted across Europe.
The tree is also valued for its ability to fix nitrogen, improving poor soils, and for its very hard, rot-resistant timber, traditionally used for fence posts and outdoor construction.
Our Black Locust honey trees are available as one- to three-year-old nursery plants depending on current stock.
