Alder Buckthorn (Frangula alnus) is a native deciduous shrub appreciated for its discreet but long-lasting flowering, which is highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects.
Although the flowers are small and not showy, they are produced over a long period and provide a valuable nectar resource throughout the season.
This shrub naturally thrives in damp or fresh soils, making it particularly suitable for wet areas, wildlife hedges, naturalistic planting and biodiversity-focused gardens.
Alder Buckthorn generally reaches around 1 to 3 metres in height depending on growing conditions. Its berries are decorative and appreciated by wildlife, but they are not edible for human consumption.
