Asian Pear ‘Sao Zu Li’ is a rare cultivar maintained under this name, but its exact pomological identity remains uncertain.
We have not found a reliable research, germplasm or historical source that clearly identifies a pear cultivar under the exact spelling ‘Sao Zu Li’. For that reason, we prefer not to copy the characteristics of better-known Chinese pears with similar-sounding names.
In particular, it should not automatically be treated as ‘Tsu Li’. ‘Tsu Li’ is a well-documented old Chinese pear, but we have found no evidence proving that ‘Sao Zu Li’ is simply another spelling or synonym of that cultivar.
We are therefore listing ‘Sao Zu Li’ conservatively as a rare Asian pear for collectors. Our own observations of the trees and fruit will gradually allow us to document flowering time, ripening season, fruit quality and growth habit more accurately.
