Frequin Rouge is a major French cider apple for powerful, deeply coloured and structured ciders. Its tannin-rich juice develops complex smoky, spicy and musky aromas. We recommend it mainly for blending, where it adds bitterness, body and length. Several distinct forms are grown under this name, meaning fruit quality and tree behaviour may vary according to the source of the grafting material.

Description

Frequin Rouge is a traditional and important French cider variety. It produces a strong bittersharp juice.

It originates from the extreme west of France, in the region of Bretagne, but is used in all the French cider-growing areas. It is a required variety for several “appellations”, including Cornouaille in Bretagne and Pays d’Auge in Normandie.
