Verdot Perry Pear Tree is a traditional Norman perry pear variety used in the production of perry, including blends associated with the Domfrontais region.
The fruit is small, generally around 40 to 60 g, and is not especially sweet. Its main interest lies in its high tannin and polyphenol content, which brings structure, body and length to perry blends.
Verdot is usually harvested from late October to early November. It can be pressed with other perry pear varieties such as Champagne or Fausset to create a more balanced and complex blend.
The tree flowers from early to mid-season and pollinates well with Champagne. Like many traditional perry pear trees, it is vigorous and naturally forms a broad umbrella-shaped habit.
This variety is traditionally grown with little intervention and is not known for any major disease sensitivity in orchard production. Under suitable conditions, Verdot can produce around 20 tonnes per hectare on average.
Our Verdot perry pear trees are grafted onto different rootstocks and offered in several forms. The rootstock determines the vigour and eventual adult size of the tree.
