Mitchell Buartnut Tree is a hybrid walnut resulting from a cross between Butternut (Juglans cinerea) and Japanese Walnut / Heartnut (Juglans ailantifolia). It combines the hardiness and flavour of butternut with the productivity and easier cracking qualities of heartnut.
The variety Mitchell is appreciated for producing medium-sized nuts that crack and clean well, often releasing good pieces of kernel. The flavour is rich and mild, making the nuts suitable for fresh eating, baking and traditional culinary uses.
This vigorous tree is fast-growing and can eventually form a broad crown, making it suitable for nut orchards, food forest systems and large gardens. Like most walnut relatives, it prefers deep, fertile and well-drained soil in a sunny position.
Mitchell is also valued for its strong resistance to butternut canker, a serious disease affecting pure butternut trees. It is considered a robust and productive choice for growers looking for a resilient walnut-type tree adapted to colder temperate climates.
For best nut production, planting another compatible walnut, heartnut or buartnut nearby is recommended to improve cross-pollination, even though Mitchell is sometimes described as partly self-fertile.
