BA29 suits growers seeking a moderately vigorous pear tree that crops early and remains easier to manage than a seedling-rooted tree. It tolerates relatively heavy, moisture-retentive soils and is useful for compact forms and denser orchards. Its limitations are shallow rooting, sensitivity to limestone and incompatibility with certain pear cultivars, which may require an interstem.

BA29 is a semi-vigorous precocious rootstock for pears, derived from the Provence quince. Quince rootstocks are widely used for producing semi-dwarf and semi-vigorous European pear trees, but note they are not compatible with all varieties.
BA29 produces a mature tree with a height of 3m – 4m.
Trees grafted on BA29 can be planted as bushes or small half-standards, spaced 3.5m – 4m apart. This is also a good rootstock for grafting large fan and espalier pear trees.
