Monsieur Hâtif is an excellent choice for harvesting large plums from late July or early August. Its dark purple fruit has melting, juicy, sweet and pleasantly aromatic flesh, ideal for fresh eating and desserts. The tree is partially self-fertile but crops better with a pollinator. Early blossom is exposed to frost, and ripe fruit can drop quickly.

The plums are particularly juicy, with a fairly mild flavour, and ripen in early August – near the beginning of the main plum season. The stone comes away easily from the flesh.
Monsieur Hatif is well-known in northern France and Belgium, and appears to have originated in the 18th century. It is known in England as Early Orleans, and the Victoria fruit enthusiast Robert Hogg describes it as “A second-rate dessert plum, but excellent for culinary purposes“.
