Jean Nicolas is a Belgian pear intended for cooking and traditional pear syrup rather than fresh eating. Its small fruit is mild and sweet but contains relatively little juice. We would cook it slowly in a covered dish with a small amount of water. The tree is healthy and hardy, although limited storage life means the autumn crop should be processed fairly promptly.

Description

Jean Nicolas pear tree produces medium to small pears with a sweet flavour and a rather low juice content.

This is mainly a cooking pear. Because the fruit is not very juicy, it is better cooked in water, or gently stewed with some water in a covered dish or parcel, rather than dried further in the oven.

The pears are picked or collected during the second half of September and are eaten from harvest through October. They can be kept cool, but this is not among the longest-keeping cooking pears.

Jean Nicolas has no particular disease sensitivity and shows good-quality vegetation.

Flowering is mid-season to late. It pollinates well with Saint Mathieu, Légipont and other compatible pear varieties flowering at the same period.

Jean Nicolas is a traditional Belgian pear. It was found in Jolimetz, in northern France, in the high-stem orchard of Mr Paul Bureau, where many other varieties were also identified.

In the Pays de Herve, in Wallonia, Belgium, this pear is used to make pear syrup.

We produce this grafted pear tree on rootstocks that influence the vigour and final size of the mature tree. It is available in several tree forms depending on availability.
