Yuzu No. 4 Citrus Tree is a selected form of yuzu appreciated for producing fruit of better quality than the standard type. The fruit can be used as a substitute for lemon, but is far more aromatic, with a powerful fragrance highly valued in cooking, drinks, sauces and desserts.
Yuzu fruit is generally less juicy than a classic lemon, but its rind and juice offer exceptional flavour intensity. Harvest usually takes place from October to December, depending on climate and growing conditions.
This hardy citrus selection can tolerate temperatures down to around -16°C once well established and planted in favourable conditions. As with all citrus, young plants and container-grown trees are more sensitive to frost than mature trees planted in the ground.
Yuzu No. 4 can be grown outdoors in sheltered temperate gardens, ideally in a warm sunny position protected from cold winds. A wall, courtyard or greenhouse-like microclimate can greatly improve winter hardiness and fruit ripening.
Our Yuzu No. 4 trees are grafted onto different citrus rootstocks, including Citrumelo 4475, Poncirus Pomeroy and Poncirus Flying Dragon. These rootstocks influence vigour, cold tolerance, soil adaptation and fruit quality.
The plant can also be grown long-term in a large container, provided it receives regular feeding, watering and winter protection if necessary. Like many hardy citrus varieties, Yuzu No. 4 is thorny and should be handled with care.
