Mecta Persimmon Tree is a compact kaki variety producing medium-sized rounded fruit with sweet flesh when fully ripe. Its moderate growth makes it particularly well suited to smaller gardens.
Mecta is a fairly early variety, with fruit ripening from October in cooler northern regions. This earliness is useful in temperate climates where late persimmon varieties may struggle to reach full maturity.
This is an astringent persimmon variety, meaning the fruit must be eaten fully soft, dried, or treated after harvest to remove astringency. Once properly ripened, the flesh becomes sweet and pleasant.
Astringency can also be removed using alcohol vapour or other post-harvest treatments, allowing the fruit to be eaten before it becomes completely soft. Drying is another excellent way to enjoy persimmons, especially when fruit maturity is incomplete.
The tree is very hardy during winter dormancy and generally resistant in cultivation. As with all persimmons, late spring frosts can damage young developing buds, but the tree can usually restart from lower dormant or secondary buds.
For best fruit quality, plant Mecta in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, especially in cooler climates. Our trees are produced in different forms and on different rootstocks, including Diospyros lotus for broad soil adaptation and quick establishment, and Diospyros virginiana for improved tolerance to very dry or very wet soil conditions.
