Hana Fuyu Persimmon Tree is a very early non-astringent kaki variety, valued for its ability to ripen reliably in cooler regions, including areas north of the Loire. The fruit develops a mild, sweet and fruity flavour and can be eaten while still firm and crisp.
Hana Fuyu is one of the earliest non-astringent persimmons, generally ripening from October to November depending on the region and growing conditions. Its earliness makes it particularly interesting for temperate climates where late persimmons may struggle to reach full maturity.
As a non-astringent variety, Hana Fuyu does not need to become soft before eating. The fruit can be enjoyed crunchy, directly after harvest, unlike astringent persimmons which must be fully softened, dried or treated to remove astringency.
The tree is hardy during winter dormancy and generally resistant in cultivation. As with all persimmons, young developing buds may be damaged by late spring frosts, but the tree can often restart from lower dormant buds or secondary axillary buds.
For best fruit quality, Hana Fuyu should be planted in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, especially in cooler regions. Regular watering during dry periods in the first years after planting and keeping the base weed-free will help the tree establish strongly.
Hana Fuyu has naturally moderate growth, making it well suited to smaller gardens. Our trees are produced in different forms and on different rootstocks, including Diospyros lotus for broad soil adaptation and quick establishment, and Diospyros virginiana for improved tolerance to very dry or very wet soil conditions.
