Zengi Maru Persimmon Tree is an early kaki variety producing fruit similar to Fuyu in shape and flavour. The fruit ripens fairly early, generally during October, making it interesting for cooler regions where late persimmons may struggle to mature fully.
Zengi Maru is an astringent persimmon variety, meaning the fruit must be eaten fully soft, dried, or treated after harvest to remove astringency. Once ripe, the flesh becomes sweet and pleasant, with the mild fruity character typical of good kaki varieties.
Astringency can also be removed using alcohol vapour or other post-harvest treatments, allowing the fruit to be eaten before it becomes completely soft. Drying is another excellent way to enjoy persimmons, especially when the fruit has not reached full maturity on the tree.
The tree is very hardy during winter dormancy and generally resistant in cultivation. As with all persimmons, late spring frosts can damage young developing buds, but the tree is usually able to regrow from lower dormant or secondary buds.
Zengi Maru is also interesting because it produces both male and female flowers, making it useful in collections where pollination of other persimmon varieties is desired.
For best results, plant Zengi Maru in a warm, sunny and sheltered position, especially in cooler climates. Our trees are produced in different forms and on different rootstocks, including Diospyros lotus for broad soil adaptation and quick establishment, and Diospyros virginiana for improved tolerance to very dry or very wet soil conditions.
