Ecker 1 Dwarf Chestnut Tree is a compact German chestnut variety selected for its naturally reduced growth, regular productivity and good fruit quality. Unlike hybrid chestnuts mainly used as rootstocks, Ecker 1 is a true fruiting variety, particularly well suited to small gardens and diversified orchards.
The tree has a naturally rounded and compact habit, generally reaching around 2.5 to 4 metres in height depending on soil, rootstock and growing conditions. Its moderate vigour makes it much easier to manage than traditional large chestnut trees.
Ecker 1 produces medium to large edible chestnuts with shiny brown skin and sweet, floury flesh. The nuts are easy to peel and are well suited to roasting, purées, jams, flour and traditional chestnut preparations.
Harvest usually takes place from late September to October. The variety is partially self-fertile, but production is improved by planting another compatible chestnut nearby, such as Bouche Rouge, Marron de Lyon, Précoce Migoule or Marigoule.
Like all chestnuts, Ecker 1 prefers acidic to neutral, light and well-drained soils, and should be avoided in active limestone, heavy compacted ground or excessively wet conditions. It is a good choice for growers looking for a productive chestnut tree adapted to smaller spaces.
Our Ecker 1 chestnut trees are available in different forms depending on current nursery stock.
