Champagne Perry Pear Tree is a traditional perry pear variety used in the production of fine, aromatic dry perry. The fruit has a high sugar content and contributes elegance, finesse and aromatic quality to perry blends.
The pears are medium-sized, generally around 70 to 100 g, and are harvested at the end of October. Champagne can be pressed with other perry pear varieties such as Plant de Blanc to create balanced and expressive blends.
This variety flowers early in the season and pollinates well with Verdot. Like many traditional perry pear trees, it is generally grown with little intervention and is not known for any major disease sensitivity in orchard production.
Champagne is one of the varieties that can be used in the production of Domfrontais-style perry. It is a very vigorous tree, forming broad, well-structured and healthy specimens with excellent longevity.
Under suitable conditions, Champagne offers good productivity, with potential yields around 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare. It is also known under several traditional names, including Brat Birne, Champinière and De Campagne.
Our Champagne perry pear trees are grafted onto different rootstocks and offered in several forms. The rootstock determines the vigour and eventual adult size of the tree.
